A cold front has passed through, bringing not much more than an increase in wind from the north and northwest, for now. Those winds are also funneling in enough cold air to bring a frost and freeze threat to a sizeable chunk of the north and west parts of our area. The end of the growing season appears to have arrived for quite a few people west of I-95.

Through Tonight: You’ll be glad winds decrease as we head deeper into the evening, because it’s gonna be a cold one tonight. Mostly clear skies and pretty dry air conspire to send temperatures into the 30s most spots. The freeze warning to D.C.’s north and west, including Montgomery, Howard, Frederick, Loudoun, Prince William, and Fauquier counties indicates temperatures near or below freezing are a good bet, primarily after midnight. Fairfax County (edit: now much of the rest of the area) is under a frost advisory as temperatures may stay a bit above freezing off the surface, but still cause frost at ground level. In downtown and to the southeast, temperatures near or just below 40 are more likely.

Tomorrow (Saturday): After a chilly start, mostly sunny skies and light winds are a treat. You might still want some layers at the least, as we won’t see a strong warm-up during the day. Highs should rise to near or just above 60 as winds shift to the south and southwest. A few passing clouds Saturday night, and a milder wind direction, might mean lows about 10 degrees warmer, or low 40s to near 50 depending on location.

Sunday: Warmer air becomes further entrenched on Sunday, and that’s good news for the Redskins game as well as anyone else outdoors. Clouds may tend to increase late, but that won’t stop it from being a decent one as highs range from near 70 to the mid-70s.
