It was cooler today than it’s been but not quite cool. Temperatures reaching highs near 50 and into the low 50s were remarkably steady through much of the day owing to the counter-effects of cooler air spilling in on a gusty northwest wind and a bit of sunshine still warming the atmosphere. And those winds have been gusty -- up near 30 mph or so across the area this afternoon. Thankfully they’ll begin to dwindle toward more manageable levels this evening.

Through Tonight: It’s partly to mostly cloudy overnight with decreasing winds as the hours pass. You’ll definitely want to dress warmly though as any gusts will add an extra chill to the air. Lows reach near 30 in the cold spots to maybe the mid-30s in the warm, though ranges should be less than sometimes thanks to a bit of cloud cover and that breeze.

Christmas Eve and Christmas: Christmas Eve is quite pleasant it seems. Just a bit of a breeze mixed with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-and-upper 40s. Overnight, Santa is kept cool but he’ll probably be sad with the snow situation as lows reach the upper 20s to mid-30s. That storm everyone’s been rooting north to set the mood on Christmas does not look to make any real impact on Sunday. Instead, we’re looking at another pleasant day. We could see some extra clouds though by late. Highs rise to near 50.

Tornadoes also rest on the weekends: The results of a new study on tornadoes and their seeming to favor work days have been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research. ARS Technica has an article about the study in which they state some of the findings. The main finding? Aerosols may play a notable role in severe weather. First: aerosols can act as condensation nuclei to help produce hail and the like. Apparently they also help create large raindrops which could be a push toward tornadogenesis by creating less evaporative cooling. Interesing theories if nothing else.
