D.C. area forecast: Blissful today, then heat builds, and builds

3:15 p.m. update: Per our earlier tweets, clouds have moved in (as of midday) and should remain over the region through tonight. So temps have leveled off in the low 70s. Radar shows a few showers to the southwest, but these should remain south and west of Prince William county through early evening. Per our forecast below, there’s a slight chance of showers overnight.

A somewhat subjective rating of the days weather, on a scale of 1 to 10.

Very, very close to perfect.

Express Forecast

Today: Mostly sunny, some increase in PM clouds. Highs: 74-78.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, slight chance of shower/t’storm. Lows: 56-62.

Tomorrow: Variably cloudy, chance of showers/t’storms. Highs: 77-82.

Since Friday, which felt more like March or November, temperatures have gradually edged upwards. We take the next step higher today, but it’s still cooler than normal. But to cap off the three-day weekend, it feels just right – tastefully bridging the cooler regime of days past with the hot weather on the way.

Today (Monday): Throw on an extra layer if you’re out early, but by mid-to-late morning jackets not required.  Beautiful sunshine all morning long, with temperatures near 70 by midday. Afternoon highs reach the mid-to-upper 70s. Some clouds may start streaming into the area by late in the afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy skies as a warm front approaches the area.  I can’t rule out a shower or thunderstorm (20 percent chance), but it’s mainly dry.  Lows range from the mid-to-upper 50s in the cooler suburbs to the low 60s downtown. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Mostly cloudy skies and more humid, as a warm front punches through the region.  There are better than even odds of showers and storms (60 percent chance), particularly in the afternoon.  Highs are around 80. Winds come in from the south around 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Showers and storms are possible in the evening. Then it’s partly to mostly cloudy and a bit muggy, with lows in the low 60s in the cooler suburbs to the mid-to-upper 60s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

A hot weather regime establishes itself over the region Wednesday through Saturday. Highs Wednesday are in the mid-to-upper 80s, and up to around 90 Thursday through Saturday.  Skies are generally partly to mostly sunny, with a little breeze from the south and moderate-to-high humidity levels.  Overnights are quite mild, with lows in the mid-60s in the cooler suburbs to near 70 downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Sunday remains very warm and humid but there’s a chance that by late in the day a cold front approaches bringing the opportunity for showers and storms (30 percent chance) Highs are again in the upper 80s. Confidence: Medium
