D.C. area forecast: Gorgeous start to week, possible storms in middle, solid close

Today’s Daily Digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the days weather, on a scale of 1 to 10.

Finally getting some payback after the last three wretchedly hot summers.

Express Forecast

Today: Partly to mostly sunny, delightful. Highs: Low 80s.

Tonight: Mostly clear. Lows 58-66.

Tomorrow: Mostly sunny. Highs: Mid 80s.

Last week we avoided 90-degree heat.  Let’s do it again!

Today and tomorrow are spectacular.  Wednesday is the one day we may flirt with 90 and, by late in the day and on Thursday, the humidity ramps up and we have a chance of showers and storms.  We’ll try to dry out and hold onto rain-free weather for Friday into the weekend (confidence is a bit shaky though).

Today (Monday): Remember how nice it was outside last Thursday? Let’s call it a repeat.  Humidity is low (for the time of year, dew points in the 50s) and a breeze from the northwest (at around 10 mph) tames the late July sun.  Highs reach the low 80s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Shut off the air conditioner and open the windows.  Under mostly clear skies lows range from the mid-to-upper 50s in the cooler suburbs to the mid-60s downtown. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): We get a modest bump up in temperatures but humidity remains very manageable with dew points 55-60. With lots of sunshine, highs reach the mid-80s. Winds are light from the west at 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Very, very pleasant. Skies are mostly clear and, while it’s not quite as cool the night before, it’s enjoyably mild, with lows from near 60 in the cooler suburbs to the upper 60s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Wednesday gets off to a sunny start, but a warm front moves into the region, with a slight chance of showers and storms by late afternoon. Highs reach the upper 80s to maybe near 90. There’s a somewhat better (40 percent) chance of showers and storms Wednesday evening and overnight. Confidence: Medium

At the moment, Thursday seems like the day of the week with the best chance of showers and storms. But, it’s not an all-day and everywhere deal, and chances are highest in the afternoon/evening (50 percent). Highs reach the mid-to-upper 80s, under mostly cloudy skies. Becoming partly cloudy late Thursday night, with lows 60-65 (suburbs-city).  Confidence: Medium

Assuming the cold front in the area Thursday night is successful in pushing through, Friday should turn out well, with partly to mostly sunny skies, lower humidity, and highs in the mid-80s.  Partly cloudy Friday night, with  lows in the 60s.  Confidence: Low-Medium

The weekend definitely has potential to be a good one, but a frontal boundary is close enough to the region that I’m reluctant to rule out the possibility of showers and storms either afternoon (20 percent chance).  Highs both days are in the mid-to-upper 80s, with overnight lows mostly in the 60s  Confidence: Low-Medium
