Capitals’ Alexander Semin has cut on right arm, source says

Updated 12:34 p.m.: Alexander Semin suffered a cut on his right arm, near his elbow, during Washington’s 4-2 win over Columbus, according to a league source with knowledge of the winger’s injury.

The team, which is customarily tight-lipped with injuries and rarely discloses ailments, denied that Semin has a cut on his arm. Here’s what Coach Dale Hunter had to say when asked about the severity of the cut.

“It’s a maintenance day more than the cut,” Hunter said. “I didn’t see the cut. It’s just maintenance more.”

It’s unclear precisely why Semin did not take part in practice Monday, and it’s also unclear whether he will be able to play on Tuesday when the Capitals host the Calgary Flames at Verizon Center.

Hunter said the team would make a decision on Semin’s status for the game Tuesday.

Infection is also a concern, according to the source, as it is any time a player is cut in an area that will come into contact with sweat and pads during the course of practice or a game.

The injury comes just as Semin appeared to be hitting his stride. The 27-year-old has three goals and two assists in the past three games as Washington strung three consecutive wins together. He has five goals and 11 points in the past seven contests.

In 34 games this season, Semin has 10 goals, 10 assists and a minus-3 rating.
