Capitals GM George McPhee: Coach Bruce Boudreau expected to return

Despite coming up short in the playoffs again, Capitals Coach Bruce Boudreau is expected to return to Washington next season, GM George McPhee said Thursday.

“I expect him to be back, yeah,” McPhee said on breakup day at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. “He's a good coach.”

The Capitals were swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Lightning on Wednesday night in Tampa. The team has advanced to the playoffs in each year of the Boudreau Era, but has not gotten beyond the semifinals despite icing one of the NHL's most talented lineups.

Boudreau is 17-20 in the playoffs with the Capitals.

“Someone said he's not a good playoff coach,” McPhee added. “There's no difference between a playoff coach and regular season coach. Either you're a good coach or you're not. He's a good coach.”

More to come soon.
