After a completely silent trade deadline day, Capitals General Manager George McPhee is scheduled to speak to the media at Kettler Capitals Iceplex around 5 p.m.
You can watch the news conference live on Comcast SportsNet and we’ll be posting his comments here once it begins. Updates follow in reserse chronological order:
— On Backstrom: “We can make the playoffs with this team, and if he comes back we can beat anybody in the conference.”
— “Everyone wants action, everyone wants deals, but you get in there and you see nothing but feathers."
— “I just didn’t see anything that makes us better.” Nothing better than what the front office believed they could bring up from Hershey.
— “I think we've been doing this long enough that [the fan base will] understand if there was something to do, we would have done it. ... Sometimes no deal is better than a bad deal.”
— Will Backstrom return this season? “Hope so, but we don't know.”
— On Nicklas Backstrom to LTI: They did it in case something big presented itself, but it didn't.
— On whether it would have been better for morale to trade away Mike Knuble or Roman Hamrlik, who have voiced displeasure with being scratched: “The bottom line is we need everybody, and we’re gonna need them. It’s not as if people volunteer to sit out.”
— “Everybody wanted to add and there was no one selling.”
— Any move “had to make us better... really there wasn't anything there that would be the right thing for our club.”
— “We’ve been on the phones for about a week, talked to every club 10-15 times, it seems."
More to come later from Katie. In the meantime, check out Tarik El-Bashir’s take on the lack of moves in the video below.
