Capitals’ John Carlson named to NHL all-rookie team

Capitals’ defenseman John Carlson was named to the NHL all-rookie team, which was announced Wednesday night at the conclusion of the league’s awards show in Las Vegas.

Joining Carlson on the all-rookie team were Carolina’s Jeff Skinner, who won the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year, San Jose’s Logan Couture, the New York Islanders’ Michael Grabner, Montreal’s P.K. Subban and Chicago’s Corey Crawford.

Carlson finished fifth in Calder Trophy voting, while Washington netminder Michal Neuvirth came in 14th.

--Alex Ovechkin was named to the NHL’s second all-star team.

--Mike Green was a finalist but ultimately lost out on the NHL Foundation Award, which recognizes the player “who applies to core values of hockey — committment, perserverance and teamwork — to enrich the lives of people in his community”.

The Kings’ Dustin Brown captured the honor for his work with the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.
