The Capitals held an optional morning skate at Verizon Center on Friday morning in preparation for a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres at 7 p.m.

While several regulars didn’t take part in the on-ice session — namely Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green and Joel Ward — they’re all expected to be in the lineup tonight against the Sabres.

Meantime, Mike Knuble, who has already appeared in two preseason games this week, will not be in the lineup.

“There’s no need for him to play all four games this week, and practice every day,” Coach Bruce Boudreau said. “He’s getting a little older, and I think he’s proven that he can play so give him the day off.”

Others not on the roster for the game against the Sabres include Mathieu Perreault and Michal Neuvirth, who have been banged up and nursing a minor injury over the past few days respectively, D.J. King, Dmitry Orlov, Mattias Sjogren and John Erskine (shoulder).

Boudreau confirmed that Braden Holtby would back up Tomas Vokoun tonight, but added that Neuvirth is on track to take part in practice Saturday as expected.

With all of that in mind, here’s what the Capitals’ lineup could look like against the Sabres tonight.
