Caps hold very optional morning skate in Detroit

After arriving in Detroit about 1 a.m. because of fog delays, the Caps just hit the ice here at Joe Louis Arena – and it’s a very optional one.

Only Joel Ward, Jeff Halpern, Roman Hamrlik, John Erskine and Braden Holtby are on the ice.

Goalie Tomas Vokoun, who is nursing a nagging groin injury, skated briefly but came off the ice after stretching.

Coach Dale Hunter is expected to address the media soon, so check back for an update.

In the meantime, here’s what’s going on with the suddenly struggling and injury-plagued Red Wings: They’ve lost four in a row and six of the past seven, and tonight they’ll be without Jonathan Ericsson (wrist), Johan Franzen (back), Darren Helm (lower body) and captain Nicklas Lidstrom (ankle).

Lidstrom skated this morning, but a bone bruise will keep him out of a 10th straight game.

Detroit's starting goalie will be Jimmy Howard.
