The Capitals placed Mike Green on the long-term injured list Thursday with the defenseman sidelined once again with a groin injury. With no apparent timetable of when Green would be ready to return to the lineup, Coach Dale Hunter said the timing worked out to place the two-time Norris Trophy finalist on LTI.

Whether the defenseman will be ready by that date is unclear, though. The fact that Green hasn’t skated since leaving mid-way through the game against San Jose on Jan. 7 when he aggravated his groin, cannot be considered a positive sign.

“Well, we didn’t expect him to — right now his strength is not good enough so with the all star game coming up in [15] days or something,” Hunter said. “Timing is everything and with the all star break he’ll have lots of time to get it stronger.”
