Group A is on the ice here at KCI, which is crowded but not overflowing with fans just yet, for the first practice of Capitals training camp.

Here are a few quick notes an observations:

--Tom Poti, who has struggled to recover from lingering groin problems, is not on the ice with his assigned group this morning, which is not a good sign for the defenseman’s health. General Manager George McPhee is expected to address Poti’s status later on Saturday.

--John Erskine is sporting an orange, no-contact sweater during Group A’s workout. He is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and it’s still unclear if he would be ready for the start of the season or if it would be closer to mid-October that he returns to full strength.

--Line combinations are a rather organic, and subject to change, thing at this point. That said, there are a few interesting groups of forwards out there this morning.

Defense:Green, Alzner, Erskine, Collins, Wellar, McNeill, Flemming.

Goal: Neuvirth, Grubauer.
