Morning skate update: Knuble, Erskine could be in lineup vs. Bruins

Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin are not taking part in this morning’s optional morning skate, so it’s hard to know what exactly Coach Dale Hunter has in store for his lines and pairings ahead of tonight’s Game 4 at Verizon Center.

But it’s possible they’ll be the same as Wednesday’s. If that’s the case, here’s a refresher:

With Nicklas Backstrom set to serve a one-game suspension, the top line was Ovechkin, Brooks Laich and Marcus Johansson.

The rest of the forward lines looked like this:

Jeff Halpern and Mattias Sjogren skated with the scratches Wednesday.

On the blue line, it’s possible rugged defenseman John Erskine will enter the lineup for the first time in these playoffs and only the second time since Jan. 31. During Wednesday’s practice, Erskine, who had minor knee surgery during his stretch as a scratch, skated alongside Dennis Wideman on the third pairing. If Erskine does return, that likely means Jeff Schultz will sit after a rough outing in Game 3.

Braden Holtby and Dany Sabourin are the only goalies on the ice.

Before the skate, the Caps announced they’ve sent extra forward Cody Eakin back to Hershey.
