In less than two hours, the 2011 NHL free agent market opens with what Capitals General Manager George McPhee called a “thin” class of players available.
Will today mark the start of the changes and offseason activity owner Ted Leonsis alluded to for the Capitals? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: If the contracts signed in the days leading up to the free agency period — ie Christian Ehrhoff’s 10-year, $40 million deal in Buffalo and Tomas Kopeckey’s four-year, $12 million deal — are any indication, there will likely be some hefty price tags.
