Nicklas Backstrom placed on IR; Mike Green doesn’t skate

Defenseman Mike Green (groin muscle) and Nicklas Backstrom (head) did not participate in the morning skate.

Green has not been seen on the ice since leaving Saturday’s game against the Sharks with groin tightness. It’s believed Backstrom has not skated since Friday’s practice in San Jose.

Backstrom, meantime, has been placed in injured reserve, according to a team spokesman. The move provides roster space for defenseman Tomas Kundratek, who was called up from the Bears Tuesday and will make his NHL debut tonight against the Penguins. The spokesman also said Backstrom can be activated at any time.

I saw Green walking gingerly into the rink around 9. Backstrom, meantime, watched part of the morning skate from the bench, wearing shorts and a hoodie pulled over his head.

The lines and pairings looked like this:

 Forwards
Ovechkin-Johansson-Semin
Knuble-Laich-Brouwer
Chimera-Halpern-Ward
Hendricks-Perreault-Beagle

 Defense
Alzner-Carlson
Hamrlik-Kundratek
Orlov-Wideman
Erskine-Schultz

Speaking of defensemen, Tim Sassone for the Daily Herald tweeted Tuesday night:  “Name to file away of d-man #Blackhawks might be looking at: Washington's Jeff Schultz. Scouts talk.”

Schultz has only played in two of the Caps’ past 13 games, both times seeing less than 10 minutes of ice time. He and Erskine are on the ice with backup goalie Michal Neuvirth for extra work this morning.

I’ll have more in a bit.
