Free agent right wing Garrett Mitchell signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals, the team announced today. The Capitals selected Mitchell in the sixth round (175th overall) in the 2009 draft.

Mitchell, 19, has 50 points and 140 penalty minutes in 69 games this season with the Regina Pats of the WHL. His 18 goals are second on the team, and his 32 assists are third. Mitchell will report to the Hershey Bears, Washington’s AHL affiliate, after tonight’s game with Regina on an amateur tryout agreement.

Mitchell is the latest member of the Capitals’ 2009 draft class to sign, joining Marcus Johansson (first round, 24th overall), Dmitry Orlov (second, 55th), Cody Eakin (third, 85th) and Brett Flemming (fifth, 145th).
