Several Capitals take Saturday’s morning skate off

Washington’s morning skate, which is always optional, is underway at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and three players elected to not to skate prior to facing the Red Wings Saturday at Verizon Center. Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich and Dennis Wideman aren’t taking part in this morning’s session.

Meanwhile, Michal Neuvirth who is still recovering from a bruised right foot is also not on the ice with the main group, which likely indicates that Dany Sabourin will back up Tomas Vokoun once again.

Neuvirth did head out to the ice after the main session wrapped up to get some work in with Sabourin and players not expected to start tonight, D.J. King and John Erskine.

Jay Beagle is the only other player not skating, but that’s to be expected after the Capitals downgraded his status to week-to-week Friday. Beagle has missed eight consecutive days of practice since he suffered a concussion when he was knocked out by Pittsburgh’s Arron Asham on Oct. 13.
