Potomac (Va.) Coach Jerry Roadcap said Monday night that Wilkins will take official visits to Michigan State, North Carolina, Miami and Virginia in January and that he had planned to do so even before the Cavaliers fired four assistants following the conclusion of their second 4-8 season in three years.
It’s clear, however, that the turmoil in Charlottesville hasn’t helped Virginia’s cause in regards to Wilkins. Roadcap said Cavaliers Coach Mike London and lead recruiter Anthony Poindexter were in Dumfries for a home visit with Wilkins following the coaching staff upheaval earlier this month, but it wasn’t enough to persuade him not to explore some other options.
Wilkins “really liked” former defensive line Coach Jeff Hanson, Roadcap said. “He just wants to go to a couple schools he’s always enjoyed and always dreamed of maybe looking at or playing for. I think he’s obviously still committed to Virginia at this point, but he hasn’t been able to get away on his own to do that and so he wants to see what they’re like.”
Wilkins orally committed to Virginia last June, but he isn’t the only Cavaliers recruit looking elsewhere in recent weeks. Offensive lineman Brad Henson switched his allegiances from Virginia to North Carolina last weekend, and at least four other prospects are also considering other schools in light of Virginia’s assistant coach purge.
The 6-foot-3, 305-pound Wilkins earned first-team All-Met honors for the second consecutive season this year, playing nose guard on defense and guard on offense. He was also named the Northwest Region player of the year on both sides of the ball.
Wilkins is considered a three-star recruit by most of the major recruiting services. He’ll make a final college decision in February.
“I think he’s very content with where he’s at right now, but he needs to take those visits so he’s sure of himself and not second guessing himself,” Roadcap said. “If he gets the chance to go out and see something else and he changes his mind, that’s on him. I think he’s a pretty loyal guy and a good guy for sure, but you’re not breaking any rules. I think he just wants to see what’s out there, enjoy the visits and see what goes on.”
