Virginia redshirt freshman free safety Pablo Alvarez will undergo shoulder surgery Thursday and miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Monday in its injury report. Alvarez was one of four players listed as out for the rest of the 2011 campaign.
True freshman free safety Kyrrel Latimer (DeMatha) will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Junior defensive end Connor McCartin is out due to concussion issues. Redshirt freshman wide receiver James Valeiras (Gonzaga) has a wrist injury that will force him to sit out the rest of the year.
None of the four players was expected to be a significant contributor on the team this season, though the loss of Alvarez further thins the depth at safety. Latimer has missed practice time since the start of training camp and, thus, hadn’t factored into the coaching staff’s plans for this season.
