When Virginia has advanced into the red zone this season, it has put points on the board. The Cavaliers, thus far, are 12 for 12 in red zone opportunities, including seven touchdowns. They are one of 25 FBS teams in the country that have yet to fail to score once they cross the 20-yard line.

The issue for Virginia of late has been getting past its opponent’s 20-yard line. The Cavaliers managed to do so only once last week in a 28-17 loss at North Carolina in what was the ACC opener for both squads.

Virginia’s game Saturday against Southern Mississippi could turn into a high-scoring affair, so keeping alive that red zone streak could prove imperative to the Cavaliers.

As offensive coordinator Bill Lazor pointed out this past week, a team can gain all the yards it wants; it won’t matter if said team doesn’t have sufficient points to show for it.
