Adele has definitely recorded the ‘Skyfall’ theme

For months there has been educated speculation that Adele would sing the next James Bond theme. Today we got confirmation that she is, indeed, the voice of “Skyfall.”

As the Associated Press noted, the Grammy Award-winning mom-to-be tweeted a photo of herself holding the sheet music for the signature tune from the upcoming Daniel Craig film, which is beginning to amp up its publicity efforts in advance of “Skyfall’s” Nov. 9 release.

Adele was the most obvious choice to take the 007-soundtrack baton. She’s British. She’s enormously popular with virtually every demographic, as well as a few demographics that demographers have yet to name. And, most importantly, she’s the contemporary pop star with the most obvious capacity to “Goldfinger” the hell out of this track.

The world can find out whether she actually did that or not starting Friday, when the song — titled, simply, “Skyfall,” and co-written by Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” collaborator Paul Epworth — becomes available for download via iTunes.

Where will it rank among the James Bond themes of yore: above, say, Duran Duran’s “A View to a Kill” but below Marvin Hamlisch’s “Nobody Does It Better” or the aforementioned “Goldfinger”? Will it surpass all previous attempts at spy movie music in the history of this highly niche genre?

We’ll all find out in a few days.

When she isn’t at a movie theater or writing about movies, Jen Chaney is ... um ... probably at home, watching a movie.
