The eight-time Oscar emcee tweeted out the announcement (which is such a James-Franco-as-Oscar-host thing to do) this afternoon ahead of the Academy’s official proclamation.
“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions,” he wrote. “Looking forward to the show.”
This blog predicted yesterday that Crystal might be named host, so this isn’t a total surprise. As I reported from last year’s Academy Awards, Crystal was already warming to the idea after the reception he received during his appearance at the 2011 event.
At the Governors Ball in February he said it was something he would consider if he could “do something new.” (He didn’t say it was something he would consider if Eddie Murphy bailed and the Academy needed a quick replacement, but the man can’t exactly see into the future.) So presumably, he’ll have something new for us come Feb. 26, 2012.
While this is bad news for the Muppets, it’s good news for anyone who misses the days when Crystal’s Best Picture musical montages were an Oscar tradition. And it’s good news for the Academy, who knows this year’s ceremony is in the hands of someone who probably won’t say anything Brett Ratner-esque in the next three months.
