Demi Moore is calling it quits with Ashton Kutcher.
The actress released a statement to the Associated Press this afternoon, confirming that she plans to end her marriage to the “Two and a Half Men” star.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton,” Moore said to the AP. “As a woman, a mother and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life.”
Ashton Kutcher tweeted confirmation of the split: “I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi,” he said. “Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail.”
The divorce announcement comes after months of ongoing speculation about the status of the marriage between Moore, 49, and Kutcher, 33, a status called into question when rumors circulated that Kutcher cheated on his wife with a San Diego woman named Sara Leal on the night of his wedding anniversary.
While that affair has not been officially confirmed, Moore’s statement and its reference to “values and vows” suggests that infidelity may have had something to do with the split.
Us had reported as recently as yesterday morning that the couple was actively working to repair the relationship, spending time together at the vacation home owned by Moore’s former husband, Bruce Willis. But apparently those efforts were unsuccessful.
It’s unclear how the split will affect joint projects the two actors worked on together, most notably their DNA Foundation (short for Demi and Ashton Foundation), which works to end sex trafficking. This afternoon it’s appropriately business as usual on the D&A web site.
In her AP statement, Moore added, “This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation." Given all the hubbub that’s led up to the divorce announcement, privacy may be challenging for both her and her family to find.
