Jeremy Renner: ready to throw punches in “The Bourne Legacy”? (Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images)

Deadline has reported that Renner, two-time Academy Award nominee for “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town,” has been offered the chance to play the main super-spy in “The Bourne Legacy,” the next chapter in the Jason Bourne saga.

Renner would play a new character who also happens to be an undercover government operative similar to Jason Bourne. Matt Damon, who played Bourne in the three previous movies, will not return for the fourth.

Several other actors — including Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Anthony Mackie — were also reportedly being considered for the role. The question now is whether Renner can make time for the part. After finishing “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” he’s already signed on for “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunter” and “The Avengers.”

Are you in favor of Renner in the role of thinking man’s action star? Should the Bourne movies continue without Damon as primary focus? Weigh in by posting a comment.
