The 90-second clip has no dialogue. Rather, footage from the movie musical is accompanied by Hathaway singing “I Dreamed a Dream,” an emotional and wobbly performance that will certainly be problematic for some “Les Mis” fans. (Hand raised.)
Beyond the singing, the gritty and gray universe in the trailer is visually stunning.
We see images of Hugh Jackman’s Jean Valjean waist deep in water as prisoner 24601 and later comforting a fifthly young Cosette in a bleak forest. Then there’s Russell Crowe looking appropriately intense as Javert.
Eddie Redmayne as Marius makes a stand for revolution on the barricades and eyes the lovely Cosette, played by Amanda Seyfried. Opinions about her voice aside, Hathaway looks convincingly miserable while Fantine has her head sheared like a farm animal.
With several months until the film is released (it’s due out in December), it’s safe to assume there are more clips to come. My request? More Valjean next time, please.
