Rooney Mara, Viola Davis and Emma Stone are Academy Award nominees this year. And all three of them captured fashion journalists’ attention during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, as they watched models parade down the runway in creations by some of America’s top designers. Their appearances at the crucial-to-couture event immediately sparked speculation about the upcoming Oscars — would the actresses pluck their glamorous looks straight from the shows, or perhaps commission designers for custom orders?

Honestly, most of the collections did not seem red-carpet ready, with the exception of Marchesa, a go-to of sorts for critic-approved formal gowns. (George Clooney’s girlfriend, Stacy Keibler, was reportedly gazing at the designer’s wares with an eye toward Oscar’s red carpet.)

But let’s not rule out the notion that one of these actresses might let the runway be her guide. Based on the shows the ladies attended — Calvin Klein’s and Vera Wang’s — could they have potentially found dresses that suit their style?

Rooney Mara and Calvin Klein

Mara attended Calvin Klein’s presentation as the week drew to a close. Given her performance in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” which earned her a best actress nomination and sparked a fashion line of its own, it seems likely that she will stick to a dark color palate and edgy shape for the Oscars. Several ensembles in the Calvin Klein collection contained a mixture of leather and softer fabrics. And if anyone could pull off leather detailing on the red carpet this year, it would certainly be Mara.

Emma Stone and Calvin Klein

Emma Stone, who also sat front row at the Calvin Klein show, happened to wear a peach Klein design to the Golden Globes in 2011. That led some to believe she attended the fashion show with the purpose of selecting another sartorial crowd-pleaser.

The unique, plunging necklines seen on a couple of Klein’s creations would be incredibly flattering on Stone’s lithe figure, but hopefully she will find a bright hue just as stunning as last year’s Globes pick.

Viola Davis and Vera Wang

Oscar nominee Viola Davis was spotted among onlookers at the Vera Wang fall 2012 presentation. The sheer gowns from Wang’s collections may not work for Davis, but the rich orange — similar to the color of this year’s Tangerine Tango — would look divine on her.
