“Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” has potential Oscar contender written all over it. It’s based on Jonathan Safran Foer’s poignant novel about a boy coping with the 9/11 death of his father. Its cast — which features Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, Max von Sydow and, in his first major film role, previous Jeopardy Kids Week winner Thomas Horn — is exceptional. And it’s directed by Stephen Daldry, thee-time Academy Award nominee for his work on “Billy Elliot,” “The Hours” and “The Reader.”

Of course, having pedigree doesn’t guarantee nominations. But based on the trailer below, the film, which releases on Christmas Day, certainly has awards season potential.
