The Amazing Spider-Man” — the reboot of the “Spider-Man” saga in which Andrew Garfield will take on the role of Peter Parker — doesn’t arrive in theaters until July of 2012. But that hasn’t stopped Sony from setting a release date for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

Deadline reports that the studio plans to release the sequel May 2, 2014.

“I think it speaks volumes about our confidence in what we are seeing on the new film and our desire to move quickly on the next installment,” a Sony exec tells Deadline’s Nikki Finke.

It also speaks volumes about how crazy-far in advance the hype machines around these tentpole films are starting to rev up. We’re getting first looks at Henry Cavill as Superman two years before he will appear onscreen. And now we’re already supposed to start looking forward to a sequel whose first chapter we won’t even see until next July?

Who knows if we’ll all be alive come May 2, 2014? Actually, I take that back. Should anything endanger our existence prior to that date, I am sure Spider-Man — or possibly Superman, or Batman — will save us. With great numbers of movie tickets to sell comes great responsibility.
