The around 200 police officers needed to stand guard outside the New Hope Baptist Church and at a family gathering cost the city $187,000, according to CBS, which represents 5 percent of Newark’s budget for one year. One resident interviewed by CBS believes the Houston family should pay for the extra police, while others think the ceremony should have been open to the public if they were paying for it.

The funeral, attended by many celebrities, was broadcast on television and streamed online.

Houston was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton in February, the weekend of the Grammys. An autopsy revealed that cocaine, marijuana and prescription drugs were present in the singer’s system at the time of her death.
