Chris Richards: First off, I love the idea of these two demigods forming as a group and giving it an actual name. But no one is ever going call them "The Throne." For real. "Are you going to the Throne show?" "How's that new album from the Throne?" Go ahead and read those two sentences out loud — it's the only time you're ever going to hear them spoken in your life. Because the Throne is such a bad name! (Weird Al was like, "YES!")
It all makes me wonder about the other bad ideas this collaboration might surface. I felt a wave of excitement when the drop date and the tour dates were announced on Monday but it quickly evaporated when I remembered that sad-sloppy performance from Jay and Ye at SXSW in March. And "Otis" is a fine song, but a hard song to get riled up about. That said, I'm not expecting a revelation from the tour or the album. But I really hope they prove me wrong on both fronts.
Allison Stewart: I'm looking forward to the tour: Everything I've heard from the disc so far is underwhelming-lots of Kanye and Jay-Z going on about how they're killing it ("The Hermes of verses"?) without actually killing it. There'll be a level of one-upsmanship onstage that'll be much more entertaining. It almost has to be.
David Malitz: My favorite show in 2008 was Kanye and my favorite show in 2009 was Jay-Z. So I think I'll have to go with the tour on this question. Especially because they'll have to break from The Throne and play some solo material. The people who pay $250+ for tickets are going to be getting a few hours worth of entertainment, for sure. Of course, a proper Kanye tour in support of "Twisted Fantasy" would have been preferred, but what can you do?
