STAN LEE is such a vigorously perpetual presence at conventions, past comic shops and in cameos that the Intergeek community was humming with health-scare rumors after the 89-year-old canceled several recent appearances.

But with a statement Friday, the mystery was solved: The Marvel mastermind had surgery to install a pacemaker — not long after appearing at Baltimore Comic-Con earlier this month.

“Now hear this! Your leader hath not deserted thee! In an effort to be more like my fellow Avenger, Tony Stark, I have had an electronic pace-maker placed near my heart to insure that I’ll be able to lead thee for another 90 years,” Lee, who turns 90 in December, wrote, in part, on the website of his company, POW! Entertainment.

Early Saturday, the irrepressible Lee — already back to work — told Comic Riffs:

“[I’m] busy working on my next superhero now: the Phantom Pacemaker!”

And that, Stan Lee Troops, is Comic Riffs’ Quote of the Week.
