A truck driver was killed and five people were injured Tuesday when a truck crossed the median on a busy Fairfax road and caused a multi-vehicle pileup, police said.

Albert Spriggs, 65, of Sterling, was driving a flatbed truck westbound on Braddock Road around 2:30 p.m. when his vehicle veered into oncoming traffic near Ox Road, Fairfax County police said.

The truck sideswiped a van and then struck another vehicle head-on, police said. The second impact caused the truck to overturn and come to rest on its side.

Three other vehicles were also involved in the crash, but police did not specify how.

Spriggs was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Four other people were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said they do not know why the truck crossed the median, but speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
