10 yrs. for former Va. cop in child pornography case

NORFOLK, Va. — A former sergeant with the Portsmouth Police Department has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for distribution of child pornography.

The U.S. attorney’s office says 63-year-old Thomas Humphries received the sentence Monday in Norfolk. He pleaded guilty in July.

According to court documents, Humphries said he was working as an undercover police officer in December 2009 when he distributed an image of child pornography using a website where images of minors engaged in sexual activity are posted.

Investigators said his claim did not hold up.

Besides the prison term, Humphries was sentenced to 20 years of supervised release once he completes his sentence.
