An Alexandria man who slit the throats of his 3-year-old daughter and her mother last year was sentenced Thursday to two life sentences plus 20 years.

Simon Bahta, 35, was found guilty in March to two counts of first-degree murder by an Alexandria Circuit Court jury. Judge Lisa Kelmer imposed the sentence recommended by the jury.

Bahta killed his ex-girlfriend Seble G. Tessema, 27, and their daughter, Eden on April 11 in an apartment in the 300 block of South Reynolds Street.

At his trial, Bahta’s lawyers argued he was not guilty by reason of insanity.
