A 20-year-old man was arrested Thursday in connection with the killing of Reston resident Bharat Patel over the weekend, Fairfax County police said.
Abir Ali, of Prince George’s County, was taken into custody around noon following a search of his home, police said. He is being held by the Office of the Sheriff in Prince George’s County.
Fairfax County police found the body of Patel, 40, in thick bushes surrounding a power box in the 11900 block of Winterthur Lane, where Patel lived in an apartment, police said. The discovery was made around 2 a.m.
Officers initially responded to a call for a fight in that block at 12:45 a.m., but did not find any sign of one. About an hour later, police said a missing person report was made at Hunter Woods Plaza, which is nearby and where Patel was a co-owner of a Dunkin’ Donuts store.
The officer realized the description of the missing person matched that of one of the people allegedly involved in the fight on Winterthur Lane, so he went back to investigate, police said. Officers then found Patel’s body in the bushes.
Police later released a sketch of the suspect based on interviews with witnesses who saw the altercation.
Police did not release a motive for the killing. Patel had opened the Dunkin’ Donuts store in Hunter Woods Plaza less than a week before he was called, a spokeswoman for the company said.
