71-year-old woman killed in D.C. apartment fire

A 71-year-old woman was killed after a fire broke out at her apartment in Southeast Washington early Wednesday morning.

According to police, the blaze erupted in the home of Mildred Maria Harrison, in the 1600 block of 17th Street SE around 1:30 a.m.

While putting out the flames, firefighters found Harrison’s body on the floor of her apartment. Officials said Harrison was already dead when firefighters found her.

The fire remains under investigation. The determination of Harrison’s cause of death is pending an autopsy.
