8-year-old boy killed in Alexandria crash

An eight-year-old boy was killed Sunday afternoon in Alexandria when a car jumped a curb and went onto a grassy embankment where he was standing with his mother, police said.

The crash occurred on the westbound side of Duke Street, just past the turnoff onto Interstate 395 North. The boy died at the scene and his mother was taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Jody Donaldson, a spokesperson for the Alexandria police department.

The driver stayed at the crash site as investigators looked into the cause of the accident. Police have not yet determined whether charges will be filed.
