Aggressive driving blamed in fatal car crash in Anne Arundel

A 52-year-old woman was killed after she drove into oncoming traffic, hit another car and flipped into a roadside ditch in Severna Park, police in Anne Arundel County said.

The fatal, two-vehicle crash occurred about 8:20 a.m. Tuesday on Baltimore and Annapolis Boulevard near Lower Magothy Beach Road.

According to investigators, Sherry Lynn Hopkins of Arnold, Md., was driving northbound in a 1997 Chevy S10 pickup truck. Witnesses reported to police that she was passing other motorists on the right shoulder and abruptly turned back into the roadway.

Police said Hopkins lost control of her truck, crossed the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and struck a 2002 Ford F350 pickup truck.

The truck continued into a ditch and flipped over, ejecting Hopkins. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Ford truck, 41-year-old Jimmy L. Pope of Pasadena, Md., was not injured in the collision.

The crash investigation is ongoing, but police attribute the accident to speed and aggressive driving by Hopkins.
