The director of an Alexandria recreation center was arrested after he allegedly grabbed an 11-year-old boy during a Wednesday night basketball game, police said.

Police said Robert D. Gordon, 55, the director of the Charles Barrett Recreation Center, was charged with a misdemeanor count of assault and battery.

Gordon was playing basketball Wednesday night with some youth when he and an 11-year-old boy got into “a verbal altercation, which got heated,” according to Alexandria police spokesman Jody Donaldson. Donaldson said Gordon “physically grabbed the boy” on the court.

Police later accompanied the boy and his family to the Alexandria magistrate, and Gordon was charged, Donaldson said.

Gordon did not return a call for comment.

William Chesley, deputy director of the Alexandria Parks and Recreation Department, said Gordon was placed on leave with pay pending an internal investigation.
