Four female American University students were approached from behind and fondled while walking near campus along Massachusetts Avenue in the past week, according to a campus alert issued Monday.

The attacks occurred since Sept. 24, but all were reported to university public safety officials on Monday, according to school spokeswoman Maralee Csellar. She said the university issued the alert promptly after getting the reports.

The woman told campus authorities they were approached between late evening and early morning while walking along the 4200 block of Massachusetts Avenue NW, between the Berkshire Apartments and the Ward Circle Building, where the main campus begins.

In three of the cases, the alert says a man grabbed the women’s buttocks. In a fourth case, the alert says the man grabbed near the victim’s chest, and then ran away.

He is described as a white male between 20 and 30 years old, standing between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall. He has been seen wearing a navy blue sweat shirt or a dark blue hoodie, and blue jeans.

Though off campus, Csellar said that stretch of Massachusetts Avenue is “frequently travelled by students. There are a large number of apartments there.”
