Area Muslim leader Mohammad Mehboob found dead in Occoquan River

A Prince William County Muslim leader was found dead Friday in the Occoquan River, a day after family members reported him missing.

Mohammad Mehboob, 58, of the 6900 block of Jeremiah Court in Manassas, was president of the Virginia Muslim Association and a leader at the Dar AlNoor Islamic Community Center in Manassas.

Fairfax County police reovered Mehboob’s body from the river shortly after 12:30 a.m. Friday near the Route 123 bridge overpass, authorities said. {Police began searching for him after his family reported him missing Thursday.

The state medical examiner’s office will make a determination on his cause of death, said Fairfax Police spokeswoman Shelley Broderick, a department spokeswoman.

Kathy Clark, president of the regional interfaith group Unity in the Community, said many area’s religious community were shaken by Mehboob’s death.

“I’ve always felt that he was welcoming,” said Clark. She said Dar AlNoor and Unity began working together after the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and that the mosque has kept its doors open to all.

“It’s just a shock to the community,” Clark said.
