Arrest in 2001 Pr. George’s slaying

Prince George’s County police homicide detectives have made an arrest in a 2001 fatal shooting in Upper Marlboro, authorities announced Tuesday.

In a news release, police said homicide detectives had charged 41-year-old Billy Joe Simon with murder in connection with the June 10, 2001, slaying of 27- year-old Michael Neal. Simon was arrested Thursday in District Heights, authorities said.

Police released few details about the slaying. They said officers were called to a shooting in the 12700 block of New Town Way in the Upper Marlboro area, and arrived to find Neal dead on the scene.

Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a police spokesman, said Simon and Neal “were known to each other,” and detectives believe the incident started as a home invasion robbery. He said “forensic evidence” connected Simon to the slaying, but he would not detail what that evidence is.

Rodriguez said detectives are “looking into the possibility that there were more people involved.” He would not elaborate on Simon’s alleged role in the killing.
