Attack outside carry-out ends in death

A man who was assaulted as he tried to intervene in an attack outside a Capitol Heights carry-out over the weekend has died, police said Monday.

Raymond Frederick Stewart, 50, died Sunday of injuries he sustained during the Saturday attack in the 4100 block of Southern Avenue, said Cpl. Henry Tippett, a Prince George’s County police spokesman. Stewart and a 29-year-old man had come to the aid of a 19-year-old man who was being assaulted by a group of 10 to 15 other people, Tippett said. The group soon turned on Stewart and the 29-year-old, delivering what would prove to be fatal injuries to Stewart, Tippett said.

The 19-year-old and the 29-year-old were treated at the hospital and released, Tippett said. He said investigators are still searching for those responsible for the attack and are trying to determine what motivated it.

The incident occurred about 10:40 p.m. Saturday. Tippett said he did not know whether Stewart knew the 19-year-old or the 29-year-old who were also injured.
