Barricade situation overnight in Prince George’s County

A man was arrested after an overnight barricade situation in Adelphi, police said.

The barricade situation began shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday at an apartment building in the 1800 block of Greenwich Wood Drive in Adelphi. Police were assisting U.S. Marshals in serving a warrant on Carlos Pierola, 24, in connection with a domestic-related kidnapping of his estranged wife on Dec. 15 when he barricaded himself inside, authorities said.

The standoff ended shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday, police said, when officers heard sounds that led them to believe Pierola was “in distress” and, after entering the apartment, found him attempting to take his own life.

He was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, police said. No further injuries were reported.

Pierola had been charged with burglary, kidnapping, carjacking, assault and other offenses in connection with the domestic incident. Police said they continue to investigate.
