A U.S. Agency for International Development employee from Herndon has been arrested and charged with possessing and producing child pornography, police said Friday.

Herndon police received a report of suspected child pornography at a house on the 1300 block of Grant Street on Monday, according to authorities.

Carl E. Mitchell, 60, was arrested and charged on Tuesday with one count of child pornography possession and one count of child pornography production, police said.

The USAID has suspended Mitchell without pay and removed his employee security clearance, said spokesman Lars Anderson.

Mitchell was arraigned in Fairfax County General District Court Friday morning. His hearing is scheduled for August 2.

Mitchell most recently headed the Africa water team for the USAID Bureau for Economic Growth, Agriculture and Trade, according to the agency website.
