Columbia teen dies in morning Howard County crash

A 17-year-old Columbia youth died in a Thursday morning car crash in Howard County, authorities said.

Police said Shaquan Jamal Curtis was driving a 2003 Audi A6 southbound on Columbia Road near Tarkington Place just after 3 a.m. when he lost control, hitting a tree.

Three adult male passengers were taken to a hospital in serious condition, police said.

Excessive speed was the main cause of the collision, police said, though alcohol may have contributed.

Police continue to investigate. Columbia Road was closed for several hours after the crash but reopened at about 6:15 a.m.
