Conrad Thames (Maryland Dept. of Public Safety and Correctional Services)

Police are searching for a Baltimore convict who walked away from a road crew work assignment in the Laurel area Monday, authorities said.

Conrad Thames, 27, who was serving a 10-year sentence for manslaughter and related gun charges, walked away from the work crew just after 11 a.m. on Route 197 near Muirkirk Road, authorities said. Erin Julius, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, said investigators were working to determine the exact circumstances under which he absconded.

Online court records show that Thames pleaded guilty to manslaughter and related gun charges in a Baltimore case in 2003 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Julius said she was unsure of the specific nature of the crime, but those who might encounter Thames should immediately call 911. A retake warrant has been issued for Thames’s arrest, authorities said.

Thames is 5-foot-9, weighs 162 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes, authorities said. He was last seen wearing a fluorescent road crew cover over a white T-shirt and blue jeans, authorities said.
