Court appearance for Va. sheriff charged in teen’s abduction

ROANOKE, Va. — Officials say the former Bedford County deputy sheriff captured in Kentucky after he fled morals charges is set to appear in court Monday.

Forty-seven-year-old Ernest Grubbs has been held at the Carter County Detention Center in Grayson, Ky., since Kentucky state troopers captured him Wednesday on Interstate 64.

Authorities say the 16-year-old he’s charged with abducting, has been returned to Virginia.

A detention center official, Lt. Shawn Moore, tells the Roanoke Times that Grubbs’ first court hearing on the abduction warrant likely will take place Monday morning. Carter County Attorney Patrick Flannery confirmed that arraignments in the county are typically held on Monday mornings.

Grubbs also is charged with a dozen counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor.
