D.C. police charge man with killing grandfather

A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with fatally beating a man court documents referred to as his grandfather during an argument last month in Northeast Washington, according to District police.

Davon Thomas of Northeast Washington was arrested Tuesday by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on a warrant charging him with second-degree murder.

A D.C. Superior Court judge on Wednesday ordered Thomas detained until a preliminary hearing, scheduled for Feb. 14.

Police said Thomas beat Emmanuel Campbell, 53, who lived with him in the 2000 block of Maryland Avenue NE, on Jan. 17. Campbell died at a hospital Jan. 31 after being on life support. His death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma on Feb. 1.

Court charging documents say the two men argued inside their apartment while preparing dinner. A witness said that Campbell had been armed with sharp silver object and that during the altercation Thomas claimed he had been cut.

Police said the fight continued into the apartment courtyard, where the victim was found by police lying semiconscious and bleeding from the side of his face. The court documents also state that he had been punched and kicked, and was intoxicated.
