D.C. police shot and wounded a male Wednesday night in a Northwest neighborhood just north of Howard University, authorities said.

Shortly before 11 p.m., members of a plainclothes police unit were patrolling near Georgia Avenue and Kenyon Street NW when they approached a male when they saw him holding his side, said Assistant Police Chief Alfred Durham.

The male ran east on Kenyon Street, away from the officers. Police pursued him into an alley in the 400 block of Kenyon Street, Durham said.

The male then pulled out a handgun, and one of the three officers fired, striking the male several times, Durham said.

No police officers were injured.

The man who was shot was conscious and breathing, and was transported to a hospital, Durham said. Further details were not immediately available.
